Triumphant world premiere of ‘Moby-Dick’ captures the elemental forces of the sea, Ahab’s obsession
Everyone exhale now. Moby-Dick, the opera, is a triumph.

Commissioned by the Dallas Opera in partnership with four other companies, the new Jake Heggie-Gene Scheer opera had its world premiere Friday night at the Winspear Opera House.

Stunningly staged and sung, it captures the elemental forces of the sea and Captain Ahab's obsession with the great white whale that has maimed him. Compressing a thick, densely written novel into a three-hour opera, it also highlights human dramas between two pairs of characters.

Jake Heggie has a whale of a hit with 'Moby-Dick'
DALLAS — Ben Heppner limped around stage on his peg leg, blood dripping from his face. The great white whale was in his Captain Ahab's sight.

The captain never kills the object of his unrelenting pursuit. Composer Jake Heggie, however, achieved his goal Friday night, with an achingly beautiful, magnificently sung and gorgeously staged world premiere of his "Moby-Dick," the highlight of the Dallas Opera's first season at the sparkling new Winspear Opera House. The audience responded with an eight-minute standing ovation.

Leviathan of an Undertaking
With steel masts soaring 35 feet above the stage and crushed-voile sails unfurling 70 feet across it, audiences can expect to all but taste the sea spray as the curtain rises on "Moby-Dick," a new opera by the composer Jake Heggie and the librettist Gene Scheer. The work, based on Herman Melville's classic novel, is scheduled to have its premiere Friday night at the plush Margot and Bill Winspear Opera House, the Dallas Opera's home since last October.

"I didn't want to sing about a whale hunt; I wanted to do a whale hunt," said Leonard Foglia, who is directing "Moby-Dick," as he has all of Mr. Heggie's operas since a 2002 production of "Dead Man Walking," the composer's best-known work. "Moby-Dick" represents a more ambitious goal, and not just because of the source material's renown.

Ahab Sings! (The Whale Does Not)
Seeking adventure may mean looking for trouble, but how much trouble did you have in mind? Five years ago, when the Dallas Opera began planning its move to the luxurious new Winspear Opera House, the company’s artistic director, Jonathan Pell, approached the composer Jake Heggie to commission an opera for the inaugural season, with all the risks such a project entailed. Not missing a beat Mr. Heggie told him, “I want to set ‘Moby-Dick.’ ”
